"For
some children, summertime means camp, visits to museums, parks, and
libraries, and access to a variety of fun and enriching activities. For
many low-income children, however, the reality of summer is far from
this ideal."

As soon as summer draws to a close, it’s time to start
thinking ahead. For program directors,
managers, and others who are involved in planning summer programs, summer
really begins in September. As soon as
the most recent summer slips into the past, it’s time to start thinking,
assessing, and planning—while summer’s lessons
are still fresh in your mind and easy-to-retrieve, awaiting your evaluation.
Carefully
planned summer learning programs provide youth with life-changing experiences,
so it’s important to begin with the end in mind, establishing definite goals
and steps to achieve them. The National
Summer Learning Association built this program planning guide and timeline to
help you think ahead and plan every dimension of your program, giving the youth
you serve the chance to participate in a well thought-out, goal-oriented, and
effective summer learning program.
