Until recently, the summer months have largely been ignored by education policymakers as a way to close the achievement gap and support youth development. Yet an abundance of research dating back 100 years highlights the need for and benefits of summer learning. With the pending reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), the passage of the Summer Term Education Program for Upwards Performance (STEP UP), and $100 billion in education funding included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, now is the time to re-examine the many ways summer learning programs can benefit children.

Research shows that summer learning programs can have a profound impact on:

  • Closing the academic achievement gap
  • Promoting student health and wellness
  • Fostering innovation, creativity, and a love of learning

The National Summer Learning Association is committed to ensuring that children and youth in high-poverty communities have access to high-quality summer learning programs. We work directly with policymakers and key stakeholders to make investment in summer learning a national, state, and local priority.
