Using networking, case studies, and planning tools, participants will leave with an understanding of critical research, program and learning goal development, and new ideas for engaging youth in learning over the summer months.

In this interactive session, we will discuss the public policy landscape in which summer learning programs operate. Participants will gain perspective on which aspects of summer learning policy are determined and implemented at the federal, state, and local levels respectively. We will also review the current status and possible future directions of summer learning policy at the federal, state, and local levels, as well as how advocates can promote high-quality summer learning policy based on the New Vision for Summer School. In addition, we will examine relevant federal funding streams—including 21^st Century Community Learning Centers, Race to the Top, Investing in Innovation, and others—and strategies to access federal funds from both the Department of Education and other agencies. Participants will learn (among other things):

• How to develop an "elevator speech”—as well as effective letters to public officials—advocating for summer learning policy;
• Strategies to develop school-community partnerships to support summer learning at the local level; and
• How to look for federal funding opportunities.
