Summer Learning Day on July 9 is almost upon us, and it’s a great opportunity to showcase your program and get the word out about the importance of summer learning.

Host an event during the week of July 6, to help focus attention on how summer programs:

  • Send young people back to school ready to learn
  • Support working families
  • Help to keep children safe and healthy

The National Center for Summer Learning offers free, online resources, including an event checklist, event media advisory template and summer learning talking points that you can use to kick start your event.

You can find these resources and other event planning ideas here, or by clicking on the Event Planning Kit in the left-hand column on this page.

Programs that register by July 9 will become eligible for a drawing to win one of four book packs from Scholastic, valued at $100 per pack, that students can use to complete Scholastic's Summer Reading Challenge.

Also, Playbooks Reader's Theater is offering every Summer Learning Day registrant (up to 500) one downloadable story, valued at $10-$30.

Past events have helped to spread the word about the importance of keeping kids learning over the summer and generated support from dignitaries such as President (then Senator) Obama, shown here at the Center’s 2006 Summer Learning Day event in Washington, DC.

In 2008, the Center honored Obama for his long-time support for summer learning by awarding him our first-ever Champion of Summer Learning Award. Click here to read his thank you letter

This year, actress Annette Bening, a member of the Center’s honorary board, is helping to spread the word about the importance of summer learning.  You can see her message here.

Here are samples of news stories--one newspaper story and one a transcript of a broadcast story--that resulted from 2008 Summer Learning Day events.
