The theme for Atchison Summer Academy is Village WAKANDA- based on the fictitious country of Wakanda in the Marvel Movie Black Panther.  The purpose of the unit is for students to gain knowledge of African cultures and to understand the value of and connection to African American history in their lives today; major eras, events, persons, documents, places, and dates to serve as foundation for more in-depth learning.

Learner expectation for literacy are:

Students will be able to demonstrate understanding and apply grade level phonics and word analysis in decoding words.

Students will read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. [Reading-literature and informational text]

Student will improve writing of opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons. [Writing]

Student will successfully participate in collaborative conversations about grade level topics with peers and adults in small and larger groups. [Speaking and listening]

The main genre of literature are graphic novels. Supplemental materials are provided by the Nashville Public Library.

 

 

 

What can people do to help?

Students have DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time daily. They have read most of the books and need more. We need culturally relevant books to add to our library.
