Dear Summer Learning Community,

Thank you for your inspiring work this summer and the tremendous impact you are having on students, families, and communities across the US. We are proud of our field and so many partners including those Philadelphia and Boston programs who were highlighted in this recent national NPR story

NSLA was also honored to be invited to testify before a US Senate Education Spotlight Forum regarding federal education budget cuts hosted by US Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii. We highlighted the necessity, impact and value of continued federal investments in afterschool and summer programs. You can watch our testimony video here.

In addition, our partners and staff have been busy highlighting and promoting the importance of summer learning through our:

“50 Programs in 50 Days” National Tour
Nationwide Celebration of “Summer Learning Week”
Federal and State Advocacy Efforts
NSLA Capitol Hill Internship Program and National Intern Day Reception

We look forward to celebrating your summer achievements and seeing you soon.

Summer Learning Week Highlights
During National Summer Learning Week 2025, NSLA’s team traveled the country to join many partners including a school visit with Alabama with Governor Kay Ivey, a panel on summer meals with former Iowa Governor and US Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack, events with Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Afterschool Alliance in Washington DC, a summer intern conference sponsored by MFA (Managed Funds Association) in New York City, a career mentoring event in Boston between Google employees and students from the YMCA of Greater Boston and tours of inspiring programs across Pennsylvania, Arkansas Connecticut and Florida. These models show us what success for young people can look like when we collaborate.

NSLA’s 50 Programs in 50 Days Summer Tour Continues
This year, instead of bringing staff and student leaders from 50 different programs to Washington, DC for our National Youth Leadership Institute, the NSLA team launched an ambitious new initiative: visiting, learning from, and spotlighting 50 outstanding and diverse summer programs across the country in just 50 days. The tour is still underway and we’ve already surpassed our goal, with 56 programs visited across 25 states so far. Stay tuned for our Lessons Learned Report coming this fall!

Follow us on social media to see all of the programs highlighted!

Celebrate National Intern Day on July 31st
NSLA believes summer internships are one of the most powerful and impactful forms of summer learning. But unfortunately, unpaid internships are one of the most unfair forms of summer learning. To combat this practice, NSLA runs its own all expense paid summer internship program on Capitol Hill and encourages and salutes all those who offer paid summer internships to create more opportunities and career pathways for young people.

This year, we’re celebrating National Intern Day by hosting a special reception for nearly 250 interns working in Washington, DC. A big thank-you to Managed Funds Association and Gibson Dunn for sponsoring this event.

If you’re interested in launching or growing your own summer internship program, NSLA is here to help. Please reach out to Natalia Sol for more information.
